Casualties of January
The last time I saw you
some things came together to hold a moment
we remembered when those things for us seemed determined
like the skies would show rainbows
and there was a sense that living parallel would be sure
When I was on the road and could only think of home
still I can feel the Alabama rain rolling in my ribs
the Carolina blooms still flash their colors behind my eyelids
they speak to a heart which still sees through time and circumstance
I try to swallow that promise but it’s stuck in my throat
maybe it will linger
but i’m glad for the gift of goodbye
